In November 2023, attacks were conducted on cargo ships in the Red Sea. Since then, there have been 25+ attacks at the southern entrance of the Suez Canal. During this period from November until now, most shipping companies have adjusted their routes from Asia and are now sailing via the Cape of Good Hope.
This naturally has consequences on various fronts, resulting in increasing costs due to factors such as extended voyage times and reduced available capacity. The longer voyage time of +15-20 days leads to higher fuel costs, increased CO2 costs (EU ETS), rising insurance costs due to prolonged time at sea, and a decrease in capacity: now only 4 instead of 6 round trips per year.
Tensions in the Suez Canal area continue to rise, with various countries taking actions. The implications for transportation, both in the short and long term, remain unclear. However, there are alternative options available, and we will discuss them individually with you to determine which is suitable for your needs.
